Frequently Asked Questions

Can I access the online databases from off campus?
Yes, you can. When you go to the Databases page, and select a database to use. The system will detect if you are off campus or not. If you are off campus the system will direct you to the proxy server login screen.
How do I sign in to the proxy server?
When the log in screen appears, type in your web access login as your login name. Type in your web access password as your password. You may also check the Off-Campus Access page for more information.
I've signed into the proxy server correctly, but it still won't let me log in to the database. What do I do now?
First, make sure that you have correctly typed in your username and password (it is the same as your web access username and password). If you have, and still can't use the databases, contact the Reference Department at (910) 893-1467.
Can I check out journals from the library?
No. Journals must be used in the library. You can make photocopies of the journals using the photocopiers near the circulation desk.
I have a reference question, can I ask the question without coming to the library?
Yes. You can call during regular library hours at (910) 893-1467, you can use the Ask a Librarian link on the library home page to send the reference question to our reference librarians, or you can IM a librarian using Yahoo!, Microsoft Messenger, AOL, or Google Talk. Our Screenname is CarrieRichLib.
I was using the online databases and found a citation to an article that I would like to read. I can only find an abstract to the article, where can I get the full text?
There is no guarantee that there is full text available. To check if full text is available, use the Resolver. To get to Resolver go to the Resolver page, and type in the title of the jounal you are interested in. If we have electronic access to that journal, a list of databases that contain full text for that particular journal will be listed. Check to make sure that the database covers the particular article you want. (If the article was written in 1980, and the database only covers from 1990 - current, you won't be able to access the article.) If you need that article for your research, then you can request it from interlibrary loan.
How do I know which database to use?
There is no easy way to answer this question. First try searching a database that matches the subject are that you are interested in. Go to the Databases page and select Lists of databases grouped by subject areas. Select an appropriate subject heading (e.g. if you are looking for information about computer microchips, you should look in the Science & Technology area). If there doesn't seem to be a subject heading try using the databases in the General & Reference area. If you are still having difficulty, come to the library and ask at the reference desk.
I have the call number to a book, where can I find the actual book?
When you are at the catalog page that has the books call number, make a note of the Library and location as well. If the library is University Library the book is in the Carrie Rich Memorial Library (the main library). The other libraries on campus are: Law School Library - Law Library, Business School Library - Business Library, Curriculum Materials/Media Center - Curriculum Materials/Media Center. Assuming that the book is in the Carrie Rich Memorial Library check the location of the book. If the location says reference, then the book is in the reference room.
